Fall 2010 Photography Internship Opportunity

Now that I’ve written about my ever-so-wonderful summer internship experience with miss Courtney, it’s time to post a casting call for Fall 2010. I thought I’d be able to do it on my own, but then when I updated this….

…I realized I was probably going to need some help. So! For those of you interested in this internship opportunity, here are the details:

Start & End Dates: 09/09/2010-11/19/2010
Work Days (in office): Mon-Fri from 9am-1pm (*unpaid)
Work Days (wedding days): 9/11, 9/25, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13 (*paid at $15/hr from start of wedding to end of wedding)

Basically when you are in my office, we will be editing (a lot), doing emails, customer service, ordering, packaging, shipping, etc… and that will be from 9am-1pm. I would encourage bringing your notebook, iPad, laptop, or whatever to take LOTS of notes. I am VERY generous with the information I give out to people who help me and so be prepared to learn lots. I will do everything I can to help you with whatever it is that you need help on. I shoot manually and process naturally and so I will help you achieve that. You may need to be prepared to spend the money, if applicable, on getting a website, blog, marketing, equipment, software, etc… I will tell you what works for me and pass that on to you and help customize it to fit your personal needs. You must be prepared to work hard, learn lots, and did I say work hard?

My ideal intern would be someone who learns quickly, is attentive, organized, and diligent. You must also possess a random and sarcastic sense of humor, have the ability to laugh at just about anything and you must immediately fall in like love with my children the minute you meet them.

As far as wedding day shooting, some will be in town, and some may be on road trips that may or may not require spending the night. $15/hour will be paid from the time the wedding starts to the time the wedding ends. No pay will be given during driving, or spending the night. We will pay you in good times, I promise (haha).

I would prefer the intern be in or near Charlotte, NC however if you are coming from out of state, you would need to rent out your own place nearby and cover your own costs for living.

If all that looks and sounds good to you, then here is what I need from you:

Name, phone number, email, picture of yourself, age, attach your top five favorite images, list of photography equipment you own, any other random details about yourself that will help me get a feel for you. Please email and include everything I asked to my email address at: caroline@carolineghetes.com. If any information is missing, I may skip you, so please included all I ask or more. Just not less. Please apply no later than August 31, 2010. I will make my final decision on September 1, 2010.

If you are hired, here’s my home studio and where you will be working:

Lastly, I had to share this wonderful card I received from Courtney, my previous intern, whom I will miss SO MUCH!

I can’t wait to “meet” all of you and find out who you are!

*please do not apply if there is any off-chance that you might change your mind last-minute. I just don’t have the time to deal with flakiness:)

The Perfect Intern

When I posted a call for interns this past summer, I’ll be honest. I was a nervous wreck. I was worried whoever came on board would not pick up editing as fast as I wanted them too. I was worried that this person would think my OCD tendencies were weird. I was worried that this person would be working out of my home office IN MY HOME, and realize that among the work I needed to do, and the house I needed to take care of, and of course the mothering of my kids, that this business wasn’t as glamourous as they thought. Well, truthfully, it really isn’t as glamourous as most people think it is. You don’t just start a photography business overnight. It’s a long, stressful, sleepless process, and you never reach that peak where you’re like “This is it. I’m way better than all the other photographers & I have a perfect system & balance.” With all the worries I had, the thing I worried most about was that my intern would leave feeling like he/she didn’t learn anything and that the whole experience wasn’t worth it. I was sick to my stomach about it. Believe me. But as the days and weeks went by, I realized I worried for no reason at all. In fact, the entire experience went a whole lot better than I could ever have imagined it would.

Courtney stood out immediately from the other applications I received for the internship. All I asked for was an email from my applicants containing responses to some simple questions I asked. Courtney emailed me asking if she could send hers via snail mail. Initially I thought sarcastically “umm okay?” I continued receiving applications locally, and even a few from aspiring photographers throughout the United States. I REALLY didn’t think I would get any interests outside of Charlotte, but I was blown away by the amount of people willing to travel to Charlotte to learn from me and work with me. Including Courtney. She had two things going against her. She was willing to make me wait a couple of days to receive her application using the snail mail method AND she would be traveling from Wauchula to live in Charlotte for three months for this. A few days went by, and I received a package in the mail from Miss Courtney. I opened it up and I was stunned. She made a scrapbook for an application. A scrapbook!

It was filled with pictures and personal stuff about her, many things of which we’d both had in common. I showed Alin and he simply said: “You two have a lot in common.” I put her scrapbook away and continued receiving applications and vowed that I wouldn’t let hers distract me from the others. But I couldn’t get hers out of my mind. I then concluded: “If someone took that much time and effort to think outside the box and be so creative as to make a scrapbook for an application, then that is who I want working with me. THAT is the kind of person I want to teach.” So I emailed her telling her that she was the one. And she came for 10 weeks that in my opinion, went by way too quickly. I have grown to love this girl. She was quick to help, quick to learn, and like her scrapbook application, went over and above what was asked of her. She was -the perfect intern. But not only that, she was a perfect friend. And my kids loved her to pieces. I will always think of her and will miss her dearly.

If you are an aspiring photographer and are interested in an internship opportunity for 8 weeks from 09/16/2010 thru 11/19/2010, stay tuned. I will be posting an internship casting call later on today!

For now, here are some pictures of my first and favorite intern, Courtney.

Wedding | Heather & Seth | Part Two | Taylorsville, NC

All images by Charlotte wedding photographer Caroline Ghetes.
Please do not copy, alter, or distribute without permission.

This was a very special and emotion-filled wedding for everyone involved. Heather will tell you their story.

Seth and I have been together for over 4 years. I am 20 and he is 23. We knew of each other in highschool but it wasnt until after he graduated when we became close. When I was a sophomore, we both went with my church to Myrtle Beach for a youth conference. From then on we became close friends with no intention of pursuing more than a friendship. After a year we knew we were more than friends…and the rest is history! Seth joined the marine corps not long after we began dating. If you ever want to test a relationship, join the military!! Haha. Though a lot of people doubted us, God gave us the strength to maintain a strong relationship. It is so amazing what God can do when you give him the reigns! Seth proposed at the Marine Corps Ball in 2008. We were all dressed up and looking sharp and he got down on one knee and spilled his heart out to me. I am the luckiest girl in the world! I am so lucky to be marrying my very best friend!

Seth was supposed to have a month off to get married and enjoy his new wife for one month, however the Marines called him back to duty last minute and he was given until only Monday right after his wedding to get back to work. Bummer. So not only did they have to cancel their honeymoon, but they were now going to spend most of the first year of their marriage apart. For those of you complaining and arguing about your husband not leaving the toilet seat down? There are other couples out there dealing with larger obstacles, and if I were a “betting man”, I would bet that Heather and Seth will stay true & faithful to one another and when reunited, they will love each other more than the day they were married. That’s just my guess.

A special thank you goes out to my husband Alin for helping out during the day as well as to Courtney, Tallahassee wedding photographer, for not only helping out but also second-shooting and taking care of the groomsmen.

That book Heather is writing in is the first journal that Seth bought for her. He had no idea she had been writing in it about them
for the past 5 years and gave it to him on the wedding morning for the first time.
